Sometimes I long for a list of competencies and achievements for a particular craft, so one can measure how skilled one is, and tick off when a new competency is acquired. In games, these things are pretty standard by now. For example, I play World of Tanks, and you start with a training mission. First, you learn to drive your tank, then you lean how to shoot your cannon, and then you learn sniper mode. Later on you have missions (these were recently introduced) that are aimed particularly at the strong characteristics of certain tank types. For a tank destroyer, one mission focuses on shooting and destroying a target from 300 meters or more, or killing an opponent while remaining unspotted (hilarious to do in a Hetzer, not so much fun when you're the target).

For crafts, these lists do not really exist. Sometimes they are listed as competencies or requirements for a job. If I should try and make an example list, for knitting (since I've been really into knitting, recently) it could look something like this:

Basic Skills
[x] Learn to cast on
[x] Learn to bind off
[x] Learn to knit
[x] Learn to purl

Stitches
[x] Garter stitch (knit all)
[x] Stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row)
[x] Ribbing (knit 1, purl 1 or knit 2, purl 2)
[x] Seed stitch (gerstekorrel)
[x] Easy cable
[ ] Intricate/multi-layered cable
[/] Damask (garter stitch pattern on a stockinette base)
[/] Fair Isle
[ ] Entrelac
[ ] Brioche
[/] Lace
[ ] Amigurumi / Knitting animals

Techniques
[x] Learn different casting on methods: long tail, crochet, knitting on, provisional cast on
[ ] Kitchener stitch bind-off
[x] Pick up dropped stitches the right way
[x] Learn why and how to slip the first stitch so your edge is firm
[x] Learn to have edge stitches so your stockinette curls less
[x] Join in the round
[x] Magic loop on circular needles
[x] Using douple-pointed needles
[x] Increases, the beginning: yarn over, or knit front and back
[x] Decreases, the beginning: knit 2 together or slip-slip-knit
[/] Understanding which increase/decrease to use so your stitches slant the right way
[ ] Different ways to turn a heel
[ ] Buttonholes
[ ] Picking up stitches
[ ] Knit from a chart

Projects
[x] Scarf
[x] A hat, or headwear
[ ] Gloves or mittens
[x] A shawl
[ ] A sweater or cardigan
[x] A pair of socks
[/] An afghan or blanket

Yarns (fiber content at least 60%)
[ ] Merino
[x] Superwash
[ ] Alpaca (I'm dying to try my hand at alpaca and silk some day)
[ ] Cotton
[ ] Silk
[ ] ...etc
[ ] And possibly all the different yarn weights (don't cheat by just using super bulky!)

Personally, I think it would be fun to have this (perhaps as a part of Ravelry) on a website, so you can tick off things you've done or mastered and find new ways of challenging yourself. I'm sure the above list is in no way complete, and I've sniffed at a few things but haven't really done them right or mastered them yet. It would be even better if each of the listed items was linked to a tutorial and/or video so you could learn the technique right away. And of course, you could link your project to the achievement, so you can always look up what your first brioche project was.
Considering Ravelry has a big List of feature requests that has requests queued since 2007, I'm not hopeful of seeing this on their website any time soon, but I'm willing to send it in as a feature request. The rest of the site seems full of other statistical nerdness, so this might appeal to them too.

ETA: This was already mentioned as a "Goal List" here. I'll reply to that topic and see if anything has since happened with it since 2009.

As for sewing, the list will be quite big and huge and entail most of what is in my sewing techniques binder from school. I'm not even going to start thinking about that one. But wouldn't it be fun!
