"Just needs hemming..."
May. 23rd, 2014 10:19 pmI've been working on a little new shirt for myself from fabric I bought on the day
mrtimmey and
yavain got married last year. I started it the Sunday after my father passed away, but abandoned the project almost immediately because of ...well, things happening around the cremation. Weird weeks.
I knew by that time the thing fit well enough, although I might need to lose a few kilos to make it look even better.
At some point I put some more pins in it to finish the neckline ruffle, and on a loose evening I even stitched the ruffle on...
...one of those projects...
It lay on my sewing desk, dubbed "just needs hemming."
That pretty much says everything you need to know about the project. It's nearly finished, and hemming it is not a big task, but you keep postponing it anyway.
I have a coverlock that can do a lovely stretchy t-shirt hem. It's not much work to move the needles and rethread the machine for this task, but just like ripping up seams with Mr.Seamripper and ironing your seams, it seems to get lost somewhere in the other chores.
Tonight I finally took the time to finish the shirt. The hem was pressed and basted already. I cleaned my serger and oiled it before re-threading it for the hem. I actually made a mistake at first, so I had to rip up the first hem I tried. Lucky for me I started on a sleeve hem. Finally, there were just 18 threads to tie off, and the top was done. It was just an hour's work, but it usually is an hour you might spend on something else.
I have several of these "it only needs..." projects lying around, waiting for me to pick a night to finish them. Perhaps my enthusiasm for the weekend to come helped me finish this shirt. One thing at a time!
