Voting for the EU
May. 22nd, 2014 08:24 amThe Dutch are going voting today for new members to represent them in the EU.
Of course, I have no clue (just like most people) who I'm going to vote for. Even if we might have a circus of candidates trying to win votes, I've completely missed it.
So I filled out an online poll (that are supposed to be objective) to see who I should vote for. And then the next thing became obvious: I have no clue how European politics works!
There were statements saying "Should EU politicians have the capacity to suggest new laws?". Don't they? I mean, I seriously don't know.
I never thought politics were very interesting, since our own parliament consists mostly of media-whores who are shouting at the top of their lungs trying to be heard. They make up new rules and laws in a hasty effort to be seen actively trying to make the world a better place after something terrible has happened and was big news. By the time the new rule has filtered down through burocracy to be enforced, three new ones have taken its place.
So here's a resolution: to find a documentary (or book) that can teach me how European politics work. Because I do think it's important to vote, and to know what you're voting for.

Date: 2014-05-22 08:48 am (UTC)Politics don't interest me one bit, so even finding out via a poll what I should vote for is sometimes too much effort. (I did it for the local elections and then voted something completely different after reading some background on the statements)
I think I'll vote blanco, to let 'them' know I'm not too lazy to vote but I just don't care enough.....
