Crossed out
Apr. 9th, 2014 11:19 pmAnother story of amusing night-time drivers (also known as stupid assholes).
A58 highway, between Oirschot and Best (so nearly home) and suddenly I notice signs above the road telling me to slow down to 90 kph. Soon enough, a red cross appears in the distance and the left lane is crossed out. A roadworks cart with glowing arrow emphasises this sentiment. I obediently slow down to 90 kph and am now stuck behind a big truck.
From the merging lane to my right, a car moves to the only lane left to us (the one I'm driving in) and then goes on to the left lane. She hits the breaks for a second as she notices the crossed out lane, decides to pass the truck anyway, and disappears into the distance. Due to the truck in front of me, I can't really make out what is up ahead, but I often run into road works underway as I drive at night somewhat frequently.
Suddenly, the right lane is crossed out as well. It was the last remaining lane, and arrows mark that we should drive on the shoulder of the road. The truck is not yet convinced and appears to be hugging the white line of the right lane with his outer tire (so he's still in the right lane, which was just crossed out). I decide to hug the white line, so my wheels are on either side of the white line. There might be another arrowed road works cart up ahead after all.
And then there's the idiot behind me...
He veers to the left, onto the crossed out lanes, making it all the way to the left lane. So far, nothing is yet happening on the left or the right lane, but we're not going to be told to drive on the shoulder for no reason, right?
The car accelerates and leaves the truck and me behind. He disappears into the distance.
After the Best/Oirschot petrol station, the crosses disappear and no roadworks were had. Which is a good thing, considering the guys I shared the road with tonight.
I'm guessing the crossing out of lanes was a test for the closure of A58 later this week (14/15 April, only at night) or perhaps they were still setting up the roadworks. Still is strange to be told do drive on the shoulder of the road while there's nothing going on yet. It's a good thing there weren't any actual construction workers setting up in the left lane though.
Some people do appear to get their driver's license for free when they buy a stick of butter.
