Nederland schaatsland
Feb. 9th, 2014 08:15 amI don't follow the Olympics and I'm not much of a sports-fan (although watching my brother play volleyball is always great to see, and it's been too long since I saw him play), but yesterday I heard on the news that at the 5000 meters speed skating, the Netherlands grabbed the gold, silver and bronze medals.
How awesome is that?!
Not just Sven Kramer on the podium, but flanked by Jan Blokhuijsen and Jorrit Bergsma, while the Wilhelmus (Dutch National Anthem) played for them, three Dutch flags overhead, no doubt. I must say that the mental image produced a bit of a lump in my throat. Wow.
The comments and tweets here are fun to read.
We already knew that Dutch people love to skate -- there are several beautiful paintings by Hendrick Avercamp to testify on our history with ice skating, but this is quite awesome.
And that will probably be all I'll have to say about Sochi.
