Back in the sewing-saddle
Dec. 3rd, 2013 11:16 pmFor the past few months I've worked very hard behind the sewing machine, but not so much at home as at my workplace. Lack of space, lack of my haberdashery, lack of fabrics, lack of energy and lack of inspiration.
I was so happy I was sewing in a mad dash for Maerquin!
It made me realise I really missed being inspired for an event and making pretty things for larp. My job provides me with lots of pretty things to sew (and some stock items to sew that keep returning), but none of them are for larp, and none of them will fit me.
Yesterday I visited
muizenstaartje to pick up two big bags of fabrics she once bought for larp. And I was inspired again. (Also, Muizenstaartje looked great! It was nice to see her again and to meet her little one.)
The fabrics are wonderful, and I poked Eisirt (new Anarquendor) and will poke Gûrron for their measurements so I can make them some tunics for Drachenfest.
And then there's my own dancing outfit to sew. I borrowed the Eloise top pattern from work today and quickly sewed a mock-up in a rayon knit fabric I once bought off e-bay. Since browns are out of grace, I can use all the brown rayon for mock-ups and sew the real thing from the purple rayon knit fabric that is its sister.
The L pattern fits me fine (which is amazing, since I just found out it's a girl's top), even in the vertical where I had expected to need to add length (although a centimeter or two might not go amiss). The sleeves are too long, the cuffs could be bigger (I like long cuffs with buttons!) and the back neckline shows that one warty mole I have right on my spine. I am (again) considering having it removed, since I can't keep an eye on it.
I will adjust the front to a draped neckline, since I need something to break the vast space between shoulder and bustline. The draped neckline will present a problem, since that means I can't do the bias-tape all around and I might have to finish the center back in a different manner. I could probably draft some ties from the shirt fabric itself, but I don't yet see how I'll finish the rest of the back neckline. Adding a facing would make the ties super-bulky, unless they came from the spot between the facing and the fabric.
I'm still fiddling with moving machines around, using my desk for cutting one moment and sewing the next, and grabbing stashed fabrics from a box hidden under a box hidden behind my desk, but I can manage. Being inspired makes up for the hassle, at least for a bit.
I am considering taking this project to school with me tomorrow, and skip sewing on my jacket for a fortnight, since it's very uninspiring. I don't even wear jackets anymore! I love tailored outfits, they look so damned gorgeous, but I really don't feel like working three hours on padstitching a collar... poo.
Anyway, time for bed!

We zullen zien!
