Last night's dancing lesson was again rather bizarre. I've only danced three hours (three lessons) with Bernie, which means we're still getting used to eachother. Our usual teacher had to take care of some management issues, so we were left in the hands of Roos, who hardly focuses on technique or steps, just asks if there are problems and whether a set of steps need explaining.

Bernie's favourite is the tango, and he urges me to stay close. We're still getting used to one another and there are similarities between dancing and sex. Suddenly you realise all the steps go smoother if you just move your pelvis a little closer, or if you dip in your knees only slightly.

After our lesson, I asked if we could use the small floor for a little longer. It's not just getting used to how the bodies fit together (to say it bluntly) but also which steps he knows and which steps I know. Sometimes we can pick up steps rather quickly, sometimes it takes a little more work.
We practiced without music: the hated jive, in which I never know the hand signals with the steps and the pace is far too quick for my tastes. A little bit of cha cha and a lot of tango. There's a left turn in the tango that he thinks I should do better and we practiced and practiced until I had it down.
And until there were blisters on my feet.
As for the jive, I knew a set of steps he picked up rather quickly, and he knew a set of steps I picked up rather quickly and rather like. So all was well.

We worked hard, but we rocked. And in between the difficult steps of the tango, Bernie mentioned that one of his mates would be starting in dance competition, so now Bernie had to as well. No doubt something testosterone-driven, but maybe... we'll see. There's lots more practice needed before we can even go that road.
