Skinny things
Apr. 21st, 2013 08:13 pmWhile I've been promised a contract, nothing is certain and what is necessary for my job as a custom dressmaker is that I look 'representative'. It's a nice term of saying you should look like people expect you to look. While I worked in an office, I wore jackets with nice shirts. I'm glad to say I donated most of these horribly fitting jackets to charity before I moved, as I didn't expect to ever need them again.
It is expected of me to wear at least some make up on the job, and I should look somewhat fashionable. Wearing all-black almost being frowned upon.
I'm not a big user of make-up and I hardly know how to apply it. Things had to be explained to me, like how it's a good idea to put on a second coat of mascara. (Who knew!?)
After two weeks of wearing make up to work every day, and a raccoon incident the morning after I forgot to remove my mascara, I realised I should treat my skin with good care and buy decent cleaning stuff. The HEMA had a pad drenched in "mineral oil" to remove eye make up that made me see double for ten minutes after using it.
As summer is approaching and I do expect to cycle to work more often, proper safety precautions were taken. I bought an after-sun and BB cream on sale, saving € 10,- on the lot. The BB cream had protection SPF 30, and although I had no idea what BB cream was exactly, it said it was perfect for the face and cleavage. Great! I thought. Until I found out it looked mostly like foundation...
Apparantly, BB cream is a very specific product, and I was hesitant to pancake my entire face for the wedding I had on Friday, but it was a nice opportunity to use it during Maerquin.
The BB cream was quite orange, and I could nearly see a thick layer floating on top of my skin whenever I looked in the mirror. Mascara and eyeshadow for that 'young girl look' I sport as Marianne completed it. Every time I looked in the mirror, I was both shocked and impressed. It was impressively beautiful and fake at the same time.
By the time I removed the whole layer, my skin was already gnawing, and it took quite a few cotton pads with cleansing milk, a full face wash, alcohol-containing cleansing lotion, and the oil-drenched eye make up removal pad to get somewhere. A slather of moisturiser and face cream finally finished my make up removal bomb squad routine.
By the time I woke up on Sunday morning, the redness of using make up and removing it again had disappeared, but it still felt 'off', like having been in the sun too long (which might as well have been the case too, mind you). I opted not to go for the orange BB cream but instead slathered my face in SPF 30, powdered it off (SPF 15) and applied the rest of the make up.
My face might need a few days to recuperate, but I have never had so many compliments on how beautiful I am. Of course, that was mostly to do with the plot or stupid Shelindra-followers (followers of the Goddess of Beauty and Healing), but still. I'm just very glad I don't have to do this every day.
