I can't believe how far we've come since that first workshop in November. We have done six blocks in six lessons, learned how to draft our own patterns on millimeter paper, how to select fabrics for the triangles, sashing and border, and we ended up with a lovely near-finished quilt at the end.
At least, most of us did. Of course I have a different plan for my quilt, which means I've just passed the half-way mark in sewing my blocks. While the other women were selecting fabrics for sashing and border, I was busy working on my Churn Dash blocks. Only three more to go and I've got the six blocks we did in the workshop done. That's when I start on my four alternative blocks. (In short: I've sewn 21 out of 35 blocks.)

I was really impressed with all the lovely work everyone did. Marian added an extra row of blocks she made with appliqued hexagon flowers, and Gerry also made an extra row -- their quilts will be a little longer. My friend Josine (above) remade most of her blocks to match her log cabins from lesson 4. She said the log cabin block made her think more about colour use, and she redid 12 blocks just make her quilt look better. Her deep red sashing and brown/creme/blue blocks work really well together, and she selected a cream/red paisley for the border.

I must admit I am still in doubt whether I will use my blocks straight up or on their points, but that is a discussion for a later time. Using them on their points means I will have to adjust my lay-out and that might mean I need additional blocks, or that I might need fewer blocks even. We will see! I laid out the blocks I had on the table yesterday, and it's already looking great. We'll just keep calm and carry on and see where we'll end up!
Josine took me out for pancakes and we quilted on in the afternoon at her home in the Reeshof. Here's my blocks in their planned lay-out on her table:

Block status March 1st
Finished blocks so far. Only 14 more to go!

So it's the end of the workshop! Most of us have now completed 90% of their quilt top. Attaching the sashing and borders is something we can all do at home, and the workshop was focused on making the top, not an entire quilt. The rest of the group has already signed up for the next workshop and had several lessons in quilting by hand. (It's too bad I have internship on Saturdays, or I could have joined them.) I might sign up for one later if I have the time (and a car), but I guess I could just try my hand at hand-quilting using YouTube video's as instruction. Hey, if it can teach me how to turn a heel, it can probably show me the pitfalls of hand-quilting (something about pivoting). That will be something for the future -- I still need to sew 14 blocks and figure out what sashing to use.

I hope to get around to an update on the Brown Hex later, it's March first so that means it's time for a status update.
