I've been doing some math.
Considering the Hex quilt is turning heads and everyone seems to love it (but none more than me) I have said I'll continue with it until I tire of it OR until it's single bed size.

Here's the math:

"single bed size" = "twin size" in quilting terms
"Twin size" batting = 182 x 228 cm
But according to this page a "twin size quilt" is only 137 x 228 cm, so presumably the batting is cut down to single bed size. We'll work with this smaller size, since airbeds and field beds aren't as wide as real beds and this will be taken along to larps to cover my sleeping bag.

Considering each hex is 1.5 cm across and each hex flower unit ("hex unit") measures 8 cm across, that means the entire thing made of just hexagons will be 17 hex units wide and 28 hex units tall. Since I intend to add a border I'll probably make the quilt 15 hex units wide and 25 hex units tall, meaning the finished top without borders will be 120 x 200 cms, tall enough to tuck in under my feet. Once I add a border, it will definitely be.
This means that the quilt will consist of 15x25= 375 hex units
A "hex unit" is a 7-hexagon flower which shares a 12-hex border with 6 adjacent flowers, so if I get my math right, each hex unit is the 7-hex flower with 2 solid border hexjes.

This means the finished hexagon top will consist of 375*9 = 3375 hexagons.
Holy moley.
I definitely need a quilting icon now.

An icon for my livejournal just for my quilting posts. Like I have one for yarn-related crafts (see here) and chainmail work too.

It's a good thing you got extra board hexagons. ;)
I think it will be worth it, though. Hexagonal quilts look so nice.

I have 200 hexagons but as the size of the 'finished' top increases, the circumference will increase as well. Luckily, I've found a site that generates Hexagon Graph Paper at ½ inch, so I will get some sturdy paper and start printing! There's 81 per page, so I can print a few pages and get along quite well. And I checked, the printed size is exactly the same as my bought hexagons, so it's "just" a matter of cutting a straight edge with my scissors.

(Edit for typo)

Also: my secret wish is to one day recreate this one (http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/m/military-quilt/) in cotton.

Looks insane! XD

Replying to your other comment: you don't take the paper hexes out once you've sown the hexes together?

Yes, but only if the hexagon is completely surrounded by other hexagons! So for the first flower you only need six paper hexagons left in. Then the border comes, and you have twelve, but the first six can be removed. Then the next flower comes and so on. Because the quilt grows, the circumference does too. You want the edge of the top sturdy, reinforced with the paper, until you sew it to your border -- that is, until you're nearly finished.

The printing works great, I've already wrapped a few of the newly printed ones. I've printed 3 sheets so far, so I am all set for another ton of hexagons!
