A friend of mine posted this video from the "Malmaison" event on her blog tonight.

This is re-enactment done right. I know I'm often a little dismissive of the sport, but it's a whole different cookie than what we larpers do. It takes a lot of dedication and attention to detail to have Napoleon show up with his Josephine, and the ladies of the court, and the army. And how awesome is it to actually have the Emperor, his wife, their retinue and their horses?!

I love the ear-shaking, by the way. Just awesome.

I am glad you like it. By the way - the lad at 2.16-2.18 (the soldier with the earring) came back a couple of years from Afghanistan. Completely shell-shocked, but found a new perspective in re-enactment. He's ever such a sweet man, I don't want to know, what he experienced.

A true re-enacter has passion for his part of history. My boyfriend's a re-enacter too, born from his passion for history - so I've had the luck to experience re-enacting firsthand.

Perhaps not the best comparison... but I often see LARP as "child's play" and Re-enactment as "serious business". Not that LARP is for children; it's also for adults, but the focus lies more on play, on fun. At a LARP, you don't have to worry about whether anything you do is historically correct. That's the seriousness of re-enactment.

They are both worth participating in, though. And I so love seeing my boyfriend loving what he does for re-enactment. That's worth something too =D
