This pair of pants is so old, I don't even know when I bought it. I think it must have been maybe five years ago. It's a polyester pair of pants from Miss Etam I loved to wear, with a slight bootcut falling gracefully just past the ankle.

As years passed I gained weight and the pants stretched. The inner-thigh seam frayed under the strain, escaping the serger's stitches, but an emergency repair prevented the fabric escaping even more.
Later, I finally lost some weight and my lovely pants started to sag. The hem, always gracefully skimming my foot started to meet the floor. Ugly pleats appeared from the thighs, where they were now roomy, that fell vertically indicating they were now too big. Worse, the belt loops were so sporadic, that my belt sometimes escaped the pants and held them up in very minor points.

But still they were my favorite pants.
Yesterday the zipper teeth came loose from the zipper fabric, leaving me stranded in my favorite pair of pants. I pulled the zipper off so I could get out of my pants.

And now I face a very difficult decision. Do I repair the pants? Do I cut it at the seams and sew it anew, slightly smaller, after taking the pattern? Or do I give up and throw them out?
I can't face this decision in the cold morning light, and am content to put it off. Please help.

I'd say...take the pattern, adjust it to fit (and add more belt loops) and make new pants.

I too have lamented the loss of a favourite pair of pants in the past, although that one beyond saving. The fabric had become so thin it would tear if you looked at it.
I'd go for new pants, but I get very little pleasure from making pants. It could be a challenging project to rework a piece of clothing into something new if that is up your alley.

This fabric is nigh indestructible polyester, so I could just adjust the fit a bit and add a new zipper. I'm just not sure whether it's worth tracing the pattern and destroying the entire thing first.

This is a good excuse to make new ones!
I say: tear it apart and make a pattern of it.
