Another productive gardening day today. It's kind of overcast but sunny and lovely spring weather so the four-paws and I went into the garden for some work.

I finally got some of my seedlings out into the wild and practiced my pioneering skills on some bamboo rods I bought yesterday. I also placed chickenwire around the conifer tree (wikipedia) so the cats can't go and see what all the birds are up to or get into the neighbour's yard. So far, I've only managed to scare Dusty off climbing the wooden cupboard in the garden once, but I don't doubt they'd love to count the wee little birdies in the tree come May. (One, nom nom nom, two, nom nom nom...)

First Moes!
De eerste moes is in de tuin!

I put the radishes into the soil, as some of them were also creating the bulbous shape at their root. And after pioneering the bamboo I placed the snow pea next to it, planting two near each rod. I had six, so technically I still have enough space to place the beans, but I would rather wait a little while with them. They're not at all frost-resistant, and it's only half April after all.
Next to the radishes I sowed more radishes and two rows of spring onions as well. Time to sow is now (for our zone), so I am right on time.

I cleared away a lot of weeds in the mulch path (grass, grass and then some more grass) and re-mulched a bit with more conifer droppings, but I noticed that the wildflowers underneath the conifer might be coming up so I didn't want to rip them up carelessly. I trimmed most of the dead rosemary bush out and used that instead.

Gardening

I weeded near the shed, where there was a lot of wild growth going on. This is the post-weeding picture, by the way. There's the last throes of daffodils (bottom left) and some forest strawberries next to them. The vervain (ijzerhard) is also coming up again, and that large patch near the center is tansy (boerenwormkruid). Growing up to the wall is the blackberry, going strong and stronger still now it's not surrounded by weeds like last year. I also noticed some new blackberries coming up, but I tore those out. This is quite enough blackberry for our garden.

Seedlings

Up next, in a week or two, these might go outside to play. The beans are getting quite big. The tomatoes were sowed by my dad, who was a bit distraught that I would 'only' take five plants off his hands and that I was the only one who wanted some. The paprika and lettuce are far too small to go outside yet, the courgette (just off to the left) might need some more warmth.

I also sowed anew! More spring onions and cucumber in the windowsill, another try at pumpkin (either it's really stubborn or I'm doing something wrong), as well as parsley and chives in the pots that are hanging off the rose trellis. I also planted the stumps of paksoy we ate last week and sowed red peppers for the Anarquendor garden.

In a few weeks, the garden will really explode, but so far we're off to a rolling start!
