Efteling

Today Nathreee and I went to the Efteling, a themepark that is now (for me), nearly nextdoor. The park is celebrating it's sixtieth birthday this year, and the entry fee is pretty steep, but because we went so early in the year there was hardly anyone queuing up! We could enter all the rides without having to wait.

After the ghost mansion (with Danse Macabre) and a short walk, I dashed into the Python. I remember when I was a kid I went into the Python several times in a row while my mother waited down below. Now it was Nathreee, who chose to stay behind and find a bathroom. It was as good as I remembered, but I hurried to join Nathreee with a cup of coffee.

The weather was lovely and after our coffee we continued onto other rides. Nathreee joined me on the awesome ride the Flying Dutchman, which was a bit strong and wobbly even to my tastes, so we chose a simpler ride to cool down with and went high into the sky with the Pagoda followed by some tangerines on the swan boats. Then we returned so I could sample Joris and the Dragon (onride video!) which I had to sample twice so I could compare both the water and fire side of the ride. It's a racer rollercoaster and both sides race each other. Way fun!

We also tried most of the other rides: the Vogel Rok (a dark coaster), the Droomvlucht (twice) and the monorail through the Land of the Laaf. We returned for a final ride on the Python late in the afternoon and another trip on the Pagoda and then called it a day.
It was awesome to ride all those roller coasters and to have no queues at all. The park was quiet enough to walk everywhere without incident and busy enough to be homely. I would love to return with a few friends who love rollercoasters as much as I do, because I felt a wee bit guilty leaving Nathreee outside some of the rides (even though she didn't mind much, it's still a day to have fun together, not a day to put the crazy ones on the rollercoasters and sit around listening to them having fun). March is early enough in the year that you can just forget about the queues and run into every ride you'd want to try.

By the end of the afternoon we'd seen all we had wanted to see (including a very happy little squirrel with large tufted ears!) and decided to take a bus back. We had some fries on the station and my knees started to softly whine at the long day of walking. Back home I took a shower with NoKey, who glanced at all the onride video's I found on YouTube and groaned inwardly. It was a great day.

I wouldn't mind tagging along to the Efteling once, with a few friends. I remember I enjoyed it greatly the last time I was there - so if I have the time and money, count me in when you go again....
