After having one very smart jackdaw have the run of the birdfeeder for a week, I finally spotted the first small bird on the tray today. A success! I was afraid the feeding tray might be too close to the house at first, but apparantly seeds that have been out here for a week are appetizing enough to risk it.
The pigeons are starting to flock to the other feed, so I might have to stop that now that the nice birds have found my garden. Pigeons aren't nice birds. I hate pigeons.
In other news, the flower bulbs I'd pressed into the ground near the shed last summer have started sprouting leaves. They're only two months early or something.

Date: 2012-01-13 02:34 pm (UTC)Plants are great survivors! We found some roots that had been severed and buried beneath a canvas for weeks and they too started regrowing.
There are special feeding protectors for birds. To allow the small birds to get to the food but not the larger birds. See: http://www.vivara.nl/sub_category/id=44/beschermproducten.html for example. (When LJ eats the url: site of Vivara.nl)
We got lots of sparrows, blackbirds, some doves, tits, one robin (rarely though), a couple of magpies and the occasional gull. We got a rowan berry (lijsterbes) tree in our back yard. :)
