The Accepted Dress
Sep. 11th, 2007 10:36 amToday I share a picture with you.
I kept the making of this dress a secret for a long time and only a few people knew I would wear it to Castlefest (last August). NoKey made the pattern, and I made it in white linen. The ribbons are bias tape (I'd use real ribbon next time, if there would be a next time...).
The dress is remarkably comfortable even though the sleeves are pretty tight. It closes with lacing in the back.
Background
From the Wheel of Time (WOT), by Robert Jordan, a series of books. The description of this dress is vague. In WOT, only women are allowed to do 'magic', because men and women tap into different halves of the Source. The male half is tainted by the Dark One and using magic would drive them mad.
Women are taught to 'channel' in the White Tower. They start as novices, clad in white, to represent a blank page. I imagine a novice's dress to be a medieval kind of dress, made of squares and triangles. Novices are discouraged to wear jewelry and are put to work not only in the first steps of magic but also in the kitchens. Hard work builds character.
After passing a test they rise to Accepted. Accepted wear a white dress striped in the colours of the seven Ajahs at cuffs and hem. In winter, they also wear a white cloak with the seven bands. The order in which the bands are is not named, but each glossary of the Wheel of time names the colours in the same order. I used this as a guide, taking blue at the top and grey at the bottom. in between are red, white, green, brown, and yellow.
Accepted are allowed to study subjects as they wish, and are expected to teach Novices. They should try to live by the rules of Aes Sedai and not lie. After passing their test, the Accepted also get the ring: a snake biting it's own tail. They must wear it "on the third finger of the left hand".
(I have the ring, NoKey gave it to me for my 24th birthday)
After passing a second test (after many years of being an Accepted and many years of being a novice before that), they are raised to a full Aes Sedai, and are given the shawl, fringed in the colour of their Ajah. The description of the Shawl is not very definite, only that it is embroidered in vines, without a colour for the shawl itself given. Aes Sedai can wear the ring on any finger they choose.
