Hen Party

With [livejournal.com profile] diverteddreamer getting married really soon, it was time for a hen party. This morning I got up way to early for a Sunday to prepare some munchies to take along and by eight-thirty [livejournal.com profile] dolphirl picked me up, all ready for a day on the town.
We met up with [livejournal.com profile] zegnooitnooit and [livejournal.com profile] palanthe (which only goes to show that I've pretty much dragged everyone into LJ after all) and carpooled to the big city: Rotterdam.

First up was a Cupcake workshop. The bride-to-be got to wear a white hat with the words "bride to be" on it, and all of the other hens got a bright red guirlande of flowers to wear. As Diverteddreamer is also known as Hellcat, the first decoration we made for the cupcakes was a pretty hellcat. This wasn't easy as the fondant stuck to most things after a few rolls, but we managed to get the gist of cattiness incorporated onto a cupcake in the end. While [livejournal.com profile] orothoniel explored the animal kingdom making tiny mice out of black fondant, using bright red eyes and making them look not only very tasty but also a little scary, others were folding little red and black petals into tiny fondant roses. All very much fun to do, including the icing, which you just have to screw up at least once if only to get to eat the icing so you can try again.

After the lovely workshop at Alice in Cakeland we moved to another location where we got all dolled up for a photoshoot. One of Hellcat's friends was a good photographer and had some bright ideas, and while we nommed on some finger food others were being posed and photographed. The group picture on the front stairs drew some stares from passers-by, and we got a little bit of insight into pin-up photography which only includes vowels ("say aaaah, ooooh, eeeeh...")

Then it was time for the High Tea, which would be the final cherry on the sweet sweet cake. We were still a little stuffed from the morning sugar rush and the fun with make-up, but the tea was consumed in litre quantities while the ducklings got their first swimming lessons in the Kralingse Plas adjacent to our table. If the weather had been better, we might have been seated outdoors, but the rain had spoiled this and our planned picknick. Still, the day was marvellous, and even though we all tried to get rid of at least some part of our assigned costume, none of us really did.

This was the first ever Hen Party I've ever been invited to, and I never got one for myself either, and still I'm a little sad we chicks don't get to do the really fun stuff like lasergaming. All in all, making cupcakes look good is probably a lot harder than shooting people, and the mousy silence as we each tried to make a cat's nose look good really says it all: it was a great day!
