Anarquendor Picknick 2012
May. 14th, 2012 03:47 pmThis (quite overwhelming) weekend started on Friday, right after the final batch of groceries had been put into an already-stuffed refridgerator. I made the raspberry cheesecake in the afternoon and then picked up my mother at the train station. We waited for NoKey's train to arrive and then continued on to the Greek restaurant I had selected, where we met my mother's sister Chris and her husband Ysbrand.
Dinner was good, but mostly it was great to catch up with everyone. I don't hardly get to see my aunts and uncles enough, especially the Nijm side of the family who now live 3 hours away from us. Aunt Chris is a gardening guru, and Ysbrand loves nice food, so there's always something to talk about. And thanks to grilled meat and salmon we could have some very nice food indeed.
On Saturday, the Day Itself, my father and his wife came by. I had coerced my dad into going to Ikea for me (playing the "Puir wee me, I don't have a car"-card) and he indeed brought me a desk chair on wheels that will go nicely with the sewing machine. I hope to say goodbye to a sore back from sewing at this point.
The raspberry cheesecake was delicious, if I may believe my samplers, and it was followed up by the taco-that-could. One of my colleagues at Albron had said they would make easy fingernibbles, but I had found a recipe that made a giant, spicy burrito. It was a bit of a fiasco (before my dad arrived), because as soon as I rolled it and cut it into slices, the filling would fall out. I fed the stirfried goo to NoKey and consulted the internet again and found a different recipe. Lucky for me I had already bought ham to eat on my sandwich, so I spread cream cheese on the taco and some ham and rolled it. This was approved of by all who had some, and my father and Detty only left after five, so we had a good afternoon.
After a quick dinner and a movie I rolled back into the kitchen to make spinach quiche for the Anarquendor picknick, making this year's birthday possibly the one where I spent most of my time in the kitchen. The last quiche was done near midnight, as I had thought with 15 attendees I would need two quiches.
On Sunday I was up early, and I prepared everything I would need for the picknick. Rob picked me and my junk and the big bag of food (including leftover cheesecake and taco nibbles) up and at the Kaatsheuvel forest we unloaded everything. The picknick had a bit of a theme, where three teams would battle for a basket of goodies. There was archery practice, a test for their herbal knowledge, some duelling, riddles and finally a long discussion where the three commanding officers would dole out points. In the end we had three winners who decided to share the contents of the basket with the rest of the group (as I'd hoped!) and we had had a wonderful afternoon in the forest.
Sadly, the second quiche had not even been touched, so as soon as I got home (after the obligatory pancake after Larp) it was tucked into the freezer.
And to my surprise the colleagues at Albron had bought me a bottle of wine for my birthday! I can't have any as I'm on antibiotics, but it was certainly a sweet gesture and I'll happily enjoy it later on.
But to tell you the truth: as much fun as this weekend was, I did miss celebrating my birthday with friends. There's still a number of people who I will not be seeing this month, as my schedule is already very full, and I always love seeing my friends.
(But not now! I'm still recuperating from all of this cooking and celebrating.)
